On 16 October, a ceremony was held in Łódź to officially unveil a street named after Professor Jan Krysiński, an eminent scholar, four-time Rector of Lodz University of Technology, Honorary Citizen of Łódź and founder of the International Faculty of Engineering. For our community, this is a particularly meaningful tribute to a man whose vision profoundly transformed Lodz University of Technology and shaped its international development.
Professor Jan Krysiński Street is located between Tymienieckiego Street and Milionowa Street, in the immediate vicinity of the Lodz University of Technology campus and the Sports Bay. This location carries a special symbolic meaning. Professor Krysiński envisioned the Academic Sports and Educational Centre and initiated the investment process that led to its construction.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the city authorities, Lodz University of Technology and the Łódź City Council, as well as members of Professor Krysiński’s family. Following a media briefing, the street sign bearing his name was officially unveiled.
A visionary and the founder of IFE
Professor Jan Krysiński was an eminent specialist in fluid mechanics and turbomachinery. He served four terms as Rector of Lodz University of Technology, leading the University from 1990 to 1996 and from 2002 to 2008. He was also an Honorary Citizen of Łódź, the recipient of multiple honorary doctorates and a Knight of the French Legion of Honour.
For the IFE community, however, he remains first and foremost the founder of a pioneering approach to international education. Professor Krysiński believed that a university should be a place where people, languages and cultures come together. His initiative led to the establishment of the International Faculty of Engineering, Poland’s first academic unit to offer degree programmes taught in foreign languages.
His vision was ahead of its time. Professor Krysiński recognised the importance of international academic cooperation and of preparing young people to thrive in a multicultural environment long before internationalisation became one of the key priorities of Polish universities.
A vision that lives on
Today, Professor Jan Krysiński’s ideas remain present in the everyday life of IFE. We form an international community of students, alumni, academic teachers and staff, united by openness, diversity, cooperation and mutual respect.
The street bearing Professor Krysiński’s name is an expression of recognition for his scientific, academic and public achievements. For IFE, it also serves as a lasting reminder of the man whose courage, foresight and determination led to the creation of an institution unique on a national scale.
Professor Krysiński’s vision does not belong solely to the past. It continues to shape the development of IFE and inspire successive generations of our community.
Professor, we remember. Your vision continues to guide us across borders.
